Office workers like to appear young

If you happen to see a person dressed in blue jeans, wearing a baseball
cap and taking a backpack in a street in Shanghai, don't take it for
granted that it is a young man in his twenties. In fact, in Shanghai,
many middle-aged people like to dress fashionably. For local people,
especially office workers who have received good education and earn high
salaries, it is a fashion for them to look younger than their age.
Ms. Zhou works in a company that sells medical equipment. At the age of
31, in her bright-colored blouse, mini skirt, and a small vest mostly
worn by girls, she looks like a girl just over twenty. Rather than that,
dramatically, with her long straight hair reaching her shoulder and the
thick bangs over her forehead, she looks like a Barbie girl.
"When I just graduated from college, I used to dress older than my age,
wearing suits to go to the office every day. Now I am turning older and I
suddenly feel that being young is such a lovely thing. So before I really
grow old, I will take every opportunity to dress fashionably. I'd be glad
if people think that I am only in my twenties," said Zhou.
And not only women fear to grow old. Many middle-aged men in offices also
like to appear young. Mr. Lin works in a luxury office building on West
Nanjing Road. Several years ago, he moved from Hong Kong to Shanghai and
worked in the real estate sector. For him, looking young is always the
most important thing in his life. In his NIKE sports shoes, checked
shirt, and leisure style trousers, he looks like a new man in his
twenties, although he is over forty now.
Psychologists say that most white collar workers in Shanghai suffer great
pressure from both work and family burdens, and refusing to grow old is a
way for them to relieve themselves of the pressure.
