Breakfast of champions

China is a country known for its cuisine, which raises the question: what
will China's culinary masters serve to athletes from around the world
during the upcoming 2008 Olympics? Sixteen of the country's culinary
kings cooked up meal ideas at an event entitled Feast of Champions at the
Beijing InterContinental Financial Street Hotel on August 24.
The resulting dishes were cleverly created to feature Olympic themes and
many meals resembled sports scenes, such as those from swimming,
gymnastics, badminton, weight lifting and triathlon. Two chefs, for
example, created a dish with hurdle patterns made of various food,
because they have high hopes for China's record-breaking hurdling hero
Liu Xiang.
But the sporting theme goes beyond the aesthetic, says American chef for
the 1984 Los Angeles Olympic Games Byron J. Bardy, who prepared a feast
for the chefs at the China General Administration of Sports' Heinz
Restaurant. These meals also provide the nutrition levels sufficient to
treat an athlete's specific needs. A bodybuilder, for example, needs
foods containing different levels of carbohydrates and fat than a gymnast
requires.
Gymnasts are often younger and usually smaller. So, their meals should
contain comparatively low levels of
carbohydrates and fat. They should eat a lot of fruits and vegetables, so
that there is a great variety of food and a complete range of nutrition.
For example, sauted egg roll with egg white and vegetables is excellent
nosh for gymnasts. But weightlifters need more carbohydrates in their
food. So, beefsteak, potatoes and noodles would be better for them.
The event was organized by Heinz and supported by the China General
Administration of Sports. It was intended to get the wheels rolling among
those in the Chinese catering industry who are now cooking up their
strategies for the 2008 Olympics.
The chefs come from restaurants and hotels in Beijing, Shanghai and
Guangzhou. The China General Administration of Sports granted the chefs a
certificate at the end of the activity, which dubbed them to be special
culinary advisors. Before the Olympics-themed dish display, the chefs
visited the China General Administration of Sports' Heinz Restaurant,
where China's top athletes become acquainted with Western food.
