"Restless Neva River" Exhibition in Shanghai

An exhibition of modern oil paintings by Russian artists is being showcased at the Shanghai Liu Haisu Art Museum. The exhibition, named “Restless Neva River” starts on February 24 and will end on March 5, 2008.

The art show includes almost 60 masterpieces. Among them are Liu Haisu’s Art Museum, and the other are works by students at Repin Academy of Fine Arts in Leningrad, Russia.

The organizer is hoping the exhibition will introduce Chinese artists and the public to new trends in Russian art, which has already had a profound influence on some Chinese artists.

Repin Academy of Fine Arts

Reportedly, the Repin Academy of Fine Arts of Russia is one of the most famous in the world, with a long history and highly praised art schools. Its reputation is for teaching art fundamentals and distinctive teaching methods. A number of world-class artists are graduates from Repin, the only
school in Europe that still preserves the realist and traditional ways of art teaching.

Year of the Rat Celebration

Bye bye Piggy, Hello Mr. Rat

In the Chinese lunar calendar, 2008 is the"Year of the Rat", and it begins on February 7, 2008.

The"Rat"is the first sign of the Chinese zodiac.

Legend has it that the Jade Emperor invited the animals for a party. The first 12 to arrive was the Rat, followed by the Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Sheep, Monkey, Rooster, Dog, and lastly, the Pig. All the animals were named after the 12-year cycle that governs Chinese life
thereafter.

Various versions of the Rat's story are particularly revealing about his character.

One version has it that, towards the end of the journey, the animals had to cross a celestial river, and the Rat asked the Ox to ferry him across. When they arrived on the other side, the Rat jumped down off the Ox's head and that's how gained first spot in the order of the Chinese zodiac.

Those born in the "Year of the Rat" are clever, ambitious, creative, hard-working, fastidious, charming and sociable, but can be a bit stingy when it comes to sharing their wealth or possessions.

Rats are compatible with Dragons, Monkeys and Oxen, but should avoid Horses at all costs.

Chinese horoscope experts say 2008 - the Year of the Rat - is about conservatism and practicality. Here's a rundown on your Chinese sign in 2008.

RAT (1938, 60, 72, 84, 96)

Naturally clever and loves a challenge. Rats love to work alone but the truly successful ones let others into their schemes. Work with others and you will win gold.

OX (1937, 49, 61, 73, 85, 97)

Good leaders, hard-working but can be stubborn. Maybe work on seeing the other point of view and you won't lock horns as much as you did this year.

TIGER (1938, 50, 62, 74, 86, 98)

Fearless, can-do people with many projects buzzing in their minds. Need to calm that over-active mind of yours to better understand the best strategy. Try meditation. If that doesn't work, drink more beer.

RABBIT (1939, 51, 63, 75, 87)

Likable and compassionate nature, however an aversion to conflict means putting important issues on the backburner. Face your fears and move on.

DRAGON (1940, 52, 64, 76, 88)

Natural-born leaders. There are a lot of 30-, 42- and 54-year-olds out there who need to open their ears and get ready to be inspired from the most unlikely people.

SNAKE (1941, 53, 65, 77, 89)

Smart, stylish and hard-working. But is your cherished financial logic restricting your China opportunities Flash the cash.

Jinling (today's Nanjing)-style Print

Besides Huizhou, Nanjing was another important center for print arts in the Ming Dynasty. Some engraving houses majored in carving illustrations for dramatic novels, and some engraved and printed a lot of valuable art "books."

The development of Jinling-style Print can be divided into the early and the late stages. Mainly influenced by the Jian'an Print, the style in the early stage was featured by more attention to figures and plots rather than the surroundings. However, the style in the late stage was greatly
influenced by the Huihzou Print, which turned out to have injected new blood to the Jinling-style Print. Multi-block prints with unparalleled fine illustrations and multi-block color printing were also well developed in Jinling.
